ABOUT BEDFORD-STUYVESANT

Bedford- Stuyvesant’s boundaries are Flushing Avenue to the north, Broadway to the northeast, Saratoga Avenue to the east, Classon Avenue to the west, and Atlantic Avenue to the South.

Bedford-Stuyvesant’s population represents one of the largest African-American communities in the nation but contains a rich mixture of cultures. The area is best known for its abundance of handsome row houses and magnificent brownstone buildings. Recently developers have constructed many inexpensively produced houses, which do not blend in with the traditional architectural style of the community, interwoven among the unique homes which date back to the turn of the century. The Community Board has made known to various City Agencies including the Board of Standards and Appeals that structures being constructed in the North for 8-10 stories are out-of-context with the norm of this community.

The community continues to grow. However, there are major concerns regarding low income housing, drugs, saving our youth, quality education, improvement in City services and rebuilding our economic base. We encourage new businesses. The Economic Development Committee working with the Merchants of Nostrand Avenue and others are making plans for BID and developing strategies for strengthening our businesses and improving the products they sell.

All General Meetings are held the first Monday of every month, at Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Plaza, 1368 Fulton Street, Multi-Service Room (basement), unless otherwise stated.
